Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals Friday night will no longer be necessary. That’s right, folks. The Oklahoma City Thunder sealed the deal last night, finishing off Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs, 107-99, in Game 6. The Thunder really turned things around after the 0-2 start in this series, which led to plenty of critics and sports analysts writing them off entirely. Personally, I think this team is the Cinderella story of the NBA right now and I wouldn’t mind seeing them win the whole damn kit and caboodle.
The Thunder have never won an NBA Championship – obviously, considering they’ve only been in existence for four years. Relocating from Seattle, the team, formerly known as the SuperSonics, has only ever won one title, so I think they’re well overdue.
The Spurs had a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter, with Parker hitting just about everything he put up. Up by 15 at the half, it seemed like San Antonio was the surefire bet to win. Their defense was practically impenetrable in the first half. Thankfully for Oklahoma City, that wall started crumbling in the third quarter. The Thunder quickly closed the gap, pulling within 6 in the first four minutes of the half, forcing turnovers left and right. The technical called on Stephen Jackson for taunting the Thunder bench was the icing on the cake. After that, Oklahoma City really started firing on all cylinders.
With Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant leading the charge, the Thunder outscored the Spurs, 32-18, in the third quarter. By the start of the fourth, San Antonio’s commanding lead had dwindled to 1. The last quarter was all Thunder, as James Harden, Derek Fisher, Westbrook and Durant were too much for the Spurs to handle. I agree 100 percent with what Steve Kerr said after last night’s game: Oklahoma City has more depth and athleticism than either the Celtics or the Miami Heat. And if they keep playing their hearts out like this, the Thunder will be tough to beat in the Finals – no matter which team they face.
